Hey there! If you're reading this, I imagine you’re either expecting a little one or supporting someone who is.
First of all, congratulations!
Pregnancy is such a magical time, but it can also be filled with lots of decisions and concerns—especially when it comes to what products are safe for you and your baby. So today, I want to share my top ten low-tox pregnancy products to help you feel confident and supported without compromising your standards.
Earth Mama Organics offers a range of natural pregnancy products that are perfect for expecting moms. I have personally used and love their perineal spray, sitz bath, nipple butter, and pregnancy/lactation teas. They also have many other products like belly butter and oil made with organic ingredients and free from harmful chemicals. These products are designed to soothe and protect your skin, making your pregnancy journey more comfortable.
This soap is suuuuuuper versatile and a must-have among natural pregnancy products. Dr. Bronner’s Pure-Castile Liquid Soap is made with organic oils and is free from synthetic preservatives and detergents. It’s gentle on your skin and safe for use throughout your pregnancy. It can be used as body wash, shampoo, face cleanser, shaving soap, and hand soap, among MANY other uses.
Comfort and support are crucial during pregnancy and nursing and the Kindred Bravely Organic Cotton Nursing Bra checks both of those boxes. It’s made from organic cotton, providing breathability and softness, which is perfect for sensitive skin. It is one of my favorite pregnancy/nursing bras.
If you're like me, leggings are a staple in your maternity wardrobe and Pact's Organic Cotton Maternity Leggings are a fantastic choice. Made with organic cotton in a Fair Trade factory, these leggings provide a soft and breathable option that supports both your growing belly and ethical manufacturing practices. Perfect for everyday wear, whether you're at home or on the go, these leggings offer the perfect blend of comfort, stretch, and sustainability.
Okay, you're probably not buying a new mattress just because you're pregnant. But you might be buying a crib mattress or upgrading your sleep situation in anticipation of baby coming. Sleep is also vital during pregnancy, and having a safe, toxin-free sleep environment is essential.
We just recently bought a MyGreenMattress and I have been loving it. They also offer Organic Cotton Sheets and an Organic Cotton Waterproof Mattress Protector free from harmful chemicals. This protector ensures a healthy sleeping space for both mom and baby... and keeps your mattress safe in the event your water breaks at night!
Staying hydrated is crucial during pregnancy, and using a stainless steel water bottle is a great way to avoid toxins in plastic bottles. This is my favorite brand of 40oz. water bottle - I take it with me EVERYWHERE. It's more affordable than others, durable, reusable, and keeps your water free from BPA and other harmful chemicals.
On a similar note, you can reduce your plastic usage by switching to reusable glass or stainless steel straws. These are a great addition to your collection of natural pregnancy products. They are easy to clean and can be used throughout your pregnancy and beyond.
Maintaining proper electrolyte balance is important during pregnancy (and birth... and always!) LMNT offers a natural electrolyte drink mix that is free from sugar and artificial ingredients. It’s a great way to stay hydrated and energized. I drink these daily and do feel like they're more hydrating than "naked water". The Watermelon Salt is my favorite flavor.
9. Diffuser
Whether you're sensitive to stinky odors, experiencing nausea or morning sickness, or just want a toxin-free alternative to candles, a diffuser can be a great option for your home. You can use calming essential oils like lavender or peppermint to help alleviate morning sickness. Always consult your healthcare provider to ensure safe usage during pregnancy and purchase oils from a reputable company that sources pure oils. This simple addition can make a big difference in your comfort and well-being.
10. Herbal Teas
Herbal teas like peppermint or ginger can soothe digestion and help with pregnancy discomforts. These natural pregnancy products are safe and effective, providing relief from common pregnancy ailments. Traditional Medicinals also makes Pregnancy Tea with red raspberry leaf in it and a Mother's Milk Tea to help promote milk production.
Investing in natural, low-tox baby gear is also important. Here are some bonus brands that I love when considering baby gear. These products are made with safe materials and are designed to keep your baby healthy and comfortable.
When it comes to diapering your baby, choosing a low-tox option like Bum Genius Cloth Diapers can make a significant difference. These reusable cloth diapers are made from high-quality materials that are free from harmful chemicals, ensuring that your baby's sensitive skin is protected. We used these almost exclusively with our first baby. Not only are they environmentally friendly by reducing waste, but they also come in a variety of adorable patterns and colors. Cloth diapering can seem daunting at first, but Bum Genius offers user-friendly designs that make the transition smooth and easy.
If you prefer disposable diapers, Kudos brand offers a fantastic low-tox alternative. Kudos diapers are made with sustainable materials and are free from harmful chemicals, providing a safe and convenient option for your baby's diapering needs.
The Haakaa Silicone Breast Pump is a simple, low-tox solution for expressing milk. Made from 100% food-grade silicone, it is free from harmful chemicals and easy to clean. This manual pump is perfect for catching let-down milk on one side while you nurse on the other, and a total lifesaver if you end up being an overproducer! Its lightweight and portable design make it ideal for use at home or on the go.
Baby Carriers (linked below)
A good baby carrier not only provides comfort and support but also enhances bonding and makes daily tasks easier. There are various types of carriers available, from wraps and slings to structured carriers and hybrids. Choosing one that suits your lifestyle and preferences can make a significant difference in your parenting journey.
If you're looking for organic options, consider brands like Boba, known for their soft wrap carriers made from organic cotton blends, and Baby K'Tan with wrap-style carriers made from GOTS-certified cotton. Lillebaby offers versatile carriers with organic options that are ergonomic and supportive and Mushie also features stylish and sustainable wraps perfect for keeping your baby close and comfortable.
I hope this list has been helpful in guiding you towards some great options! Do let me know if you've tried any of these or if there's another product you'd recommend—I love hearing about what's working well for other moms.
Remember: You don’t have to overhaul everything at once! Start by incorporating one or two low-tox items into your routine and build from there as it feels right for you.
Choosing low-tox products during pregnancy isn’t just about avoiding harmful chemicals; it’s about creating an environment where both you and your baby can thrive healthily and happily. Every small change you make contributes to a safer space for growth—and that's truly empowering!
